How are you helping?

Alzheimer's and other dementias are brain degenerative diseases that have no known cure. The hopelessness of the disease leads to people wanting to avoid all talks of the disease until it is too late. By supporting the work of the Alzheimer Society of B.C., you are ensuring there is a province-wide organization dedicated to providing services and programs to help families faced with dementia have the confidence and skills to maintain quality of life, to support the search for the cure.

My story:

My mother has an early onset genetic form of a brain degenerative disease called NIID which is a form of dementia having symptoms very similar to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. During the same time my mother's disease started manifesting, my father had a stroke causing the left side of his body to be paralyzed. Due to not being familiar with the signs of dementia, our family failed to catch my mother's illness, and continued to elicit her help in caring for my father. My mother whose brain was deteriorating fast could not provide adequate care for a paralyzed patient, and as a result, when I briefly stepped out of the house and left my father in the care of my mom, my father choked on food and passed away after being in a coma for two years. Not knowing the signs or where to seek help for dementia diseases caused delayed medical care and a lot of stress for both my mother, her dependent (my father) and my mother's caregivers (her children). My family argued frequently because we did not realize my mother was sick, and after we learned about her NIID condition, we did not know how to provide proper care to maintain her quality of life. Like our family, a lot of people fail to recognize that the change in personality in their loved ones is physiological, and would instead blame the patient for exhibiting angry, confused, suspicious, and childish behavior. This causes huge dysfunction in families and further escalates the symptoms of dementia.

Your kindness will go a long way!

Your donations, participation in the hike, and letting more people know about the fundraiser will help raise awareness which will help families catch the disease earlier, and seek medical help faster. Your support will also provide the patients with more aid which will help lessen the chances of them feeling lost, depressed, or acting hostile towards their caretakers. With your help an increase in aid for caregivers can also be provided, and caregivers will get to spend more quality time with the patient, instead of getting bogged down with the day to day tasks.

Any money raised helps people affected by dementia get the support they need today, and funds research that helps find a cure for tomorrow. Until the day we find a cure, we will strive to create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

Please make a donation today and help transform the landscape of dementia forever!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read through all this!

Hope to see you on August 14th, 2022!

Emily Yang
